This week's freebie is a taste of the Humans from last year's mini-tour. Nice for what it is, I suppose.

Beats me, but I'm getting more excited about Jakko/Fripp/Collins, especially after reading that T-Lev is also involved.

It may have been you, Geno, but somebody asked about the 2nd Jakko release.  I did order and receive it from Burning Shed.  It's good.  These weren't exactly "outtakes," but weren't quite completed, as with the material contained on Bruised Romantic Glee Club.  It would've suited me fine if those songs had been included, instead of the cover tunes, but that's no complaint.

...I hadn't realized how much of a lack there was in that gap before - from November Suite in '96 (which wasn't exactly an as-is live recording in the first place, though it's one of my favorite 'scape albums anyway) and some G3 material from '04, there was only one show ever released before now. It still seems like a niche ready for some more revisiting if the descriptions of Chicago are anything to go by.

So I guess my first comment on the recent Chicago download has to be that given the lack of unedited, uncompiled Soundscape performances before '04 it's strange that the second one made available comes from a fucked-up recording path through a soundboard.

That's probably my fault, lol.  I mean, I'm more or less assuming the release coming when it did wasn't a coincidence.

I think it sounds just fine, but I'm certainly not an audiophile, so I'm probably not the one who should say.

It doesn't sound all that fucked up to me... I suppose that strictly speaking the sound is less than perfect due to the technical limitations, but it's no big detriment to my ears.

This week's download is a version of the 1969 Sheffield gig with some additional restored material.  Sid says that if you have the Epitaph box, then it's probably not worth downloading the full thing for the extra 20 min of material, but if anyone is looking to get a taste of live KC Mark 1 and doesn't have Epitaph this might be worth getting.

I have to admit that it bothers me a bit that I can't just buy the unreleased material.  Same with the Filmore upload that had an extra track.  10 dollars (each) to get the mp3swhen I already bought the shows is a bit steep.

I feel the same way when an album I've bought is re-released with a new track or two.

Oh, well.

After my comment above I should mention that I have come to love the '98 Chicago Soundscapes download. I could understand from the beginning why it had a strong impact on those present, but had difficulty connecting with it through the recording. Not helped by a first listen in headphones, where the imperfections stood out, mostly not that big a deal so I understand why others may not have been bothered, but the distortion present at times seemed to make it difficult for me. Although, I did like parts of it and assumed it would grow on me.

It seemed to have little effect on me as I listened to it a second time, driving 35 miles across town and back, other than being moved at the end of the second long piece and feeling somewhat disgusted at the distortion on the last piece. I've had to make that trip over to a dental school a lot lately, and have settled into listening to Frippertronics and Soundscapes every time as an aid in keeping my blood pressure down since it's usually too high when they measure it before starting work. I was so into the Boston '05 Soundscapes the time before I not only missed the US 60 turnoff from I-10, I flew past yet another exit before realizing my mistake.

I still had problems with the distortion the third time I listened to it, through speakers at home. Maybe I'm overly sensitive since distortion resulting from not setting the recording levels properly ruined a bunch of looping stuff I've done in the past. Maybe there's something that bothers me about movement upward in Soundscapes, as when the sound level rises, being accompanied by more distortion.  Or maybe it's just that knowing it all ends in that last piece where the distortion is the worst of all.

I finally came to love it by not playing the whole thing, instead listening in parts, and avoiding the last piece. It worked great listening in pieces while driving late at night. Maybe soon enough I can try for the whole thing again and not have the experience ruined by the distortion on the last piece.

Just consider me crazy if you want to.

Perhaps not minding distortion makes US the crazy ones.

I very much like what I hear.
