I don't know if we've covered this poll question in the past, but something tells me we haven't (?).

King Crimson has an elite reputation as an improvisational band, though there are long stretches in their history when they barely improvised at all (80's band, double-trio, 2003 dub-duo). Nevertheless, there is a breath-taking volume of Crimprovs in the greater Crim repetoire. Which one blows your mind the most? The options given are just some of the more obvious, or classical, options. Raise your hand for whichever improv you enjoy the most, and tell us why.

Me? It's a brutal choice, between "Asbury Park" and "A Journey To The Centre Of The Cosmos", but ultimately I have to go with AP. From start to finish, every note, every space, every breath, is sheer brilliance.

First, thoughts on the options (screwed up though the poll may be):
The "Mantra" you're thinking of is not actually from Fillmore East. All we have is the opening cymbal strokes from FE, but on "Epitaph" it gets segued into a performance from Fillmore West.

I really don't like "Rich Tapestry of Life", and would rather see Muir et al represented by "All that Glitters is not Nail Polish", which is one of my all-time favorites. (Also "Zoom Zoom", but that's not formally listed as an improv and is partly composed and partly improvised and stuff).

Where's "Trio"???

And, having said all that, of COURSE I vote for "Asbury Park".

It probably sits somewhere in The Great Deceiver box, but I don't have that committed to memory (yet). The one that gets me every time is Improv(Munchen) from Heavy ConstruKction.

I don't remember "Mantra". The 72-74 incarnation had their stuff together, especially in terms of improvs, and I like the stuff on TGD. The "THRAK" improvs go on noodling for a bit too long, I think. For the sheer power of the improv, I therefore choose "M?nchen" (and yes, that's an umlaut Wink

The improvs that immediately spring to mind as favorites are Providence and Munchen. I also really like Asbury Park.

Rest assured that I was not lolling in bed eating bonbons while your poll floundered. This is an especially busy weekend for me, and right now is the first opportunity I've had to get to this.

The poll is now edited for your voting pleasure. I took the liberty of adding "Trio" so that I could vote for it because, well, it's what got me here. It was the very first Crim tune to reach out and suck me in. It'll always have a very special place in my heart.

Having said all that, if you still want to trash the whole poll and start fresh, let me know and I'll delete this one.

Impossible to answer right now. I have to listen to some of them first.

Anyway I like Asbury Park as I've been listening to it for more than 20 years, while the others improv are 'new' for my ears...

Asbury Park seems to be winning so far, which is no surprise. As you all know, of course, AP was (and I don't know what you really call it) from an improvisational "theme" (?), alongside "Voyage", "Life" and others. I've also noticed that the "Providence" theme resounds in other improvs, namely "Cerberus". Any thoughts?

Some other thoughts (none of which change the fact that my list of favorite improvs would have to start 1) Asbury Park, 2) Trio, and go from there, so these wouldn't actually get my vote):

"Daniel Dust", from TGD. This one gets the "most surprisingly light-hearted" award, and always brings a smile to my face.

The improvs on the London disk of EWO are pretty cool, especially the one where Ade swipes Trey's rubber bass (don't have the DVD handy, but I think it might be Rome #2?). The EWO improvs also make a really intersting example of what Dub was describing in terms of improvising on similar basic material.

Improv, Krimprov...

I usually end up being drawn to the Bruford-Wetton-Cross stuff or else the DoubleDuo.

Right now this thread has inspired a spin of CD3 of Heavy Construkction. I could listen to this forever! (And if it were released as a single CD a la Thrakattak then it would probably sneak into my Desert Island Five.)

Standout tracks for me are Blastic Rhino and ccccSeizurecc; power and control all in one. The version of Thrush is pretty cool, but I doubt it could be called an Improv (?)

So Rhino it is. Where's that on the pick-list? :huh:

starless and Bible black for me - probably mainly cos its the one I know best. The pre-orgasmic build up of tension before the crecendo at the end does it for me every time

I grok the fullness of the totality!
When first I got my copy of THE GREAT DECEIVER Box Set, I felt as though I was the only bloke who could not see The Emperor?s New Clothes, so close to ?ASBURY PARK? did ?A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE COSMOS? sound to my ears.
