My favorite of the recent releases I've heard:
John Zorn: The Gnostic Preludes
Tzadik hype (which I pretty much agree with, some beautiful music if you can endure the sweetness and light, which bizarrely works for me in part because I have an image of Bill Frisell reaching out to shake my hand with a smile on his face, that is, because the sweetness rings true, more compelling for me than the typically mellow Frisell and Zorn work of late because of the pairing of Frisell's playing and Zorn's writing):
Quote
Get ready for some of the most beautiful music Zorn has ever made! The Gnostic Preludes is the latest volume in the mystical quest of In Search of the Miraculous, The Goddess and At the Gates of Paradise. Here Zorn turns to chamber music simplicity with an intimate ensemble of harp, vibraphone and guitar inspired by Early Music, Debussy, the minimalism of Reich, Riley and Glass and esoteric spiritual traditions from around the world. The music is lyrical and hypnotic, perfect for early morning meditation, a lonely afternoon, or midnight contemplation. Performed with great feeling by long time Zorn collaborators Bill Frisell, Carol Emanuel and Kenny Wollesen, who interact with sensitivity and grace The Gnostic Preludes is one of Zorn's most tender and subtle creations.
Also,
Spiritualized: Sweet Heart, Sweet Light (some very poppy songs that took me a few listens to not be bored with, but then there's Evan Parker who fits well in the break on "I Am What I Am")

Sun Domingo,
Songs for End Times
(eMusic)
I don't think I'll kill myself to make sure to catch their set before the Marillion show next month, but it's not hard to hear why these guys keep getting invited for that opening slot. They're similar enough to make a good complement (smart pop-alt-rock with a nice melodic sense) even if they don't seem to have quite the same depth & craft. Regardless. I'm enjoying the songs themselves well enough so far, and a Belew guest spot never hurt anyone.
Gotye,
Making Mirrors
Pleasant fun, sunny and springtimey. I'm kinda glad I don't listen to the radio or watch Glee, or else I might already be too sick of this stuff to enjoy it this much.
The Fierce and the Dead,
On VHS
Now also at
Burning Shed
.
Archetribe,
Earthtones
REM,
Collapse Into Now
Flying Colors s/t
KTU,
Quiver
OSI,
Blood / Fire Make Thunder
Ian Anderson,
Rupi's Dance / Thick as a Brick 2
ProjeKct Zero,

Storm Corrosion
A sample listen courtesy of Sazzle. It really doesn't work as background to a Munchkin game and we didn't quite finish it all, but I very much liked what I heard. It sounds like a decent complement to
Damnation
(if really nothing alike), and much more appealing than
Grace for Drowning
. Must hunt it down for myself soon.
This was accompanied by a sampling of Indukti, a Polish (?) group I'd never heard of, which has a noticeable larks'-tongues-in-modern-jelly feel to it. I'm quite intrigued.
An assortment of other stuff to tax a houseguest's patience and brain cells:
Devin Townsend,
Ghost
Gotye,
Making Mirrors
Nik Bärtsch's Ronin,
Holon
Trombone Shorty,
Backatown
Elbow,
The Seldom Seen Kid
Stick Men,
Absalom
The CGT,
Whitewater
Marillion,
Marbles Live
David Poe,
The Late Album
Jim Matheos,
First Impressions
Grumbling about being back at work today, but arriving to find a Stick Men
Open
CD (!) already waiting for me has helped make it more bearable.

I think these guys are actually overtaking KTU and TUNER to become my favorite current-day Crimson offshoot (although as with those others, even that word is unfair - this is a
band
in every sense, not a side endeavor to anything). This one may be a slow grower, being a little less heavy and a little more ambient than the others, but I'm loving the hell out of it. The perfect complement to
Absalom
that provides another piece of the picture while not at all diminishing my excitement over whatever else is coming next.
Peter Gabriel,
So
To celebrate grabbing tickets for his stop in Philly in Sept. Not that it ever really needs a reason.
Otherwise, I suppose it's unofficial Africa(-ish) week around my house:
Carlos Lastra,
A Child Is Born
Without seeing any names, I could
almost
believe this was a previously unheard reel from Coltrane's 1961 stint at the Village Vanguard (not that you'd actually confuse the two, but still). That spirit and approach are there in spades. I think a lot of it has to do with the drummer, who's studied his Elvin and then some.
Byrne & Eno,
My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
The Trey Gunn Band,
The Joy of Molybdenum
Miles,
Agharta
The Talking Heads,
Fear of Music
Big Blue Ball
Roach & Fayman,
Trance Spirits

Morton Feldman:

Excellent performance on this last one, but the sound quality makes the Paris show the better choice.

The Red King, Chicago 8.7.08
Pat and Gavin may not be able to duet on the current tour, but at least we've got this...
Devin Townsend,
Addicted / Ghost
Still as fresh as ever in their own ways. As much as I like the others in the DTP series, I never seem to want to reach for them much when these two are handy.
Flying Colors s/t
I can't much stand the Beatleish tune anymore. The rest is still holding up most nicely.
The Dregs,
Full Circle / What If / Night of the Living Dregs
Speaking of Steve Morse. There's a good reason these are still such a mainstay in my rotation all these years later.
Garbage,
Not Your Kind of People

Kevin Gilbert
Performs Toy Matinee Live
Youssou N'Dour,

Michael Brook,
Undefeated / Country Strong

Weather Report:
Mr. Gone; s/t (1982)
I think these are two of their best albums--certainly my favorites post-Vitous.
My Dad was a WR fan, and while I always preferred the MO and Miles, it's been nice revisiting some of these albums, many that I haven't heard in a long time.
Keefe Jackson and Frank Rosaly:
Duo (45)
Tom Waits:
Blue Valentine
Miles Davis:
Paris, 11-6-67 (3rd show from the Live in Europe 1967 box)
John Butcher:
WHFR-FM, 3-25-03
Backzkowski/Sack duo:
Keet Seel
These last two are the two sides of a pre-recorded cassette. Very odd. The sound quality sounds like cassettes from the early 80s (I assume that's intentional), and the total running time is just over 20 minutes. As they made only 75 copies and the list price was under 10 dollars I can't really complain, but it is.... odd.

Marillion,
This Strange Engine / Somewhere Else / Seasons End
Post-show bliss.
Arch/Matheos,
Sympathetic Resonance
I've enjoyed it on and off since the winter, but it's only now getting tossed into the rotation every other day or so. Why now? No idea, but it's still not getting stale.

Well, keep in mind the source.
I'm not a big fan of either MT or Black Market (I think they're just "OK").
Mr. Gone is less accessible than most of their albums. It's certainly not avant garde, but it is a bit less structured. Jaco's presence is quite heavy. Down Beat's famous over reaction, a one star review (they gave HW 5 of 5), combined with Josef and Jaco's public anger over the review (which they should have blown off) has over shadowed a very interesting album. My only criticism would be not enough Wayne.
Regardless of whether you end up liking it, yeah, you really need to hear it.

Fripp & Eno,
Evening Star
Enjoyed quietly after waking up an hour early hacking and sneezing and then retreating downstairs so as not to wake anyone up. It's still not too often I just lie down and take something in without doing
anything
else, but every time makes me think I should make it more of a habit. When and if it's possible.
Otherwise it's been a few classic heat-wave selections:
Passion Sources
(v/a)
Miles,
On the Corner
Shakti,
Saturday Night in Bombay
Can,
Future Days
Tabla Beat Science
Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove
The Steve Morse Band,
Southern Steel
Quote from: Michael on 06/21/12, 05:09:59 PM
Well, keep in mind the source.
Ha - always. I'd remembered reading about the review controversy, but somehow I thought it was about one of the other late-period albums like
Procession
. Funny how much I've ignored that era while being such a big fan of the previous two in their own ways. Regardless, the library doesn't have it, but Amazon does (used for under $3), so I think I'll finally correct the oversight.

I've always said that about MT, yet somehow it's still tied for my favorite. It's regrettable, but won't necessarily put me off either.
