If you like Finnish music, you might want to try Finntroll, a hilarious blend of black metal and Finnish Viking folk music that ends up sounding an awful lot like polka metal. I picture them looking like a band full of bearded little Gimli clones. Listening to this stuff is guaranteed to make you want to hoist a flagon of mead.

Coming to Houston in March. Not sure I want to spend money on it though.

The alan lomax collection; the spanish recordings - Ibiza and Formentera - the pityusic islands
some very trppy yodeling type vocalising similar to what is heard in Bulgarian singing. i thought the disc was skipping!! my friend just returned home from Ibiza and picked this up there. Field recordings from 1952 for hardcore ethnic audiophiles only.
Fode Bangoura - Fakoly
absolutely insane totally "sick" djembe player with full ensemble including bala and chorus. one of the top most sought after from the new generation of djembefolas. This cat is BAD!! seriously BAD-ASS!!

TG - Finntroll is playing Houston? Is it a headline show or part of a festival?

And Smithney's mentioned a VLB recording with mssrs Tippett and Tippetts from 2004 is around. Oh! I! Am! In! Heaven!
Woza woza woza woza woza...

Discipline
I just finished listening to
Discipline
, and it continues to provide inspiration, enjoyment, etc. However, it did occur to me that, like The Beatles's albums, there's not a note left of surprise. (This is a compliment to how often I've played it, not a criticism of the music.)
Also, for every track there's at least one live version that's better.
Despite all of that, I'd still take it to a desert island.

Yeah for the reasons you mentioned I never bought a remaster, so I just have the lousy sounding mid-Eighties original CD release (and the LP of course), but it's such a classic record I really should get it in a listenable version.
Speaking of surprise, last night's listening included a Return to Forever concert from '74. The acoustic solos I could do without, but as a group, hey those guys were pretty hot. I never really liked Al DiMeola before, but his playing here is pretty ferocious.

Al DiMeola has proven that he can match McLaughlin and DeLucia, which I think qualifies him as a master. That said, I've never cared for what he plays ot RtF. Was this an officially released recocrding?

The Power to Believe
Today I made my first real sale: I did something I never thought I'd do (but I'm glad I did) and sold two of my paintings!
The works were conceived whilst listening to TPTB, an album that was playing when they left their mother's arms. Thank you for being such an inspiration, Crimson Boys... thank you, always.

Dimeola can play his ass off. i think his playing with RTF was excellent. he got a lot of flack for his "mechanical" technique which was really something he got out of flamenco that he utilised in a more electric rock setting. he was amazing. And they were jealous. Some of his work started to get somewhat repetitious and he may have fell into a technical rut but that can be expected. he was very young at the time. Tunes like mediterranian sunrise and land of the midnight sun are top notch.
he could be pretty hokey at times.
i don't know about his cape wearing problem.
