Brought home a six of Abita Jockamo and a Rogue Smoked Porter.
Do your part to help Gulf Coast recovery, support microbreweries in the Gulf states.

Rogue Smoked Porter is good, but when did they relocate Oregon to the Gulf?

The Abita is my part for Gulf recovery. And I found some friends who are going on a driving vacation to Colorado and Wyoming who are going to bring me back a case of Alaskan Brewing Smoked Porter. Woohoo.

This monsoon season humid heat, not to mention going a week with no or not working right A/C (just an evaporative cooler which did the job adequately except in the afternoon and evening), had me considering having a beer, but instead I went to the library and enjoyed the A/C there, and checked out a book on beer. This book presents the results of blind taste tests conducted at the Green Dragon Brewpub in Portland by beer professionals (lol) of widely available beers (available in at least a dozen states they say). For anyone interested, the results/short reviews are on the publisher's website here: The Beer Trials. These are the ones that got the highest rating: Alaskan Smoked Porter Aventinus Weizenbock Ayinger Celebrator Ayinger Oktoberfest Boulder Planet Porter Chimay Blue (Grande Réserve) Deschutes Obsidian Stout Duchesse de Bourgogne Fin du Monde Goose Island IPA Great Divide Yeti Hop Rod Rye North Coast Old Rasputin Paulaner Hefe-Weizen Rodenbach Grand Cru Russian River Pliny the Elder Saison Dupont Victory Hop Devil Ale Victory Prima Pils Widmer Broken Halo IPA

That's so funny Larry. Yours truly, for over a year would regularly attend a weekly meet-up at the Green Dragon called "Beer and Blog". I live nearby too. I can vouch for Rasputin and Yeti, superb stouts. If you ever come to PDX, I'll be happy to show you around record shops and have a beer at the Green Dragon. Perhaps my favorite stout (I am a stout lover) is Bourbon County Stout which is aged in oak barrels. This one is also very good: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/43687

Bourbon County is from Goose Island, isn't it? If you ever come to Chicago, we'll hit the record shops and then head over to Goose Island.

we'll hit the record shops and then head over to Goose Island. Could be more fun if you switch the order....

Finally tried the Stone Smoked Porter. Convinced that half the people who post on beeradvocates are doing so after the 4th or 5th pint. I am a porter fan I have to say. The smoked is very close to my alltime fave - Breckenridge vanilla Porter. Several of the reviews liken the Stone smoked to pulling a flaming log out of the bbq pit and using it to stir a beer. I would say there is a definite smoke note along with a very nice porter taste. I like it a lot, and am definitely looking forward to getting the alaskan in a month or so.

I find that I really enjoy smoked beers with pizza. Particularly, bacon-onion pizza.

I hate smoked beer. I also hate fruit flavored beers and any drink that has a bright, pretty color and an umbrella and/or fruit.
I realize those are two very different things, but I guess my point is beer (and other drinks) should be good on their own.
The smoked beers I've had were heavily smoked, so prehaps there are some that are more subtle?

Sheesh, Mr. Grumpytrousers. Guess I won't bother sharing this pitcher of mojitos with you. The Schlenkerla Marzen Rauschbier is the one I had that went so well with bacon pizza...I was afraid it was going to taste like liquid jerky, but the smokiness was subtler than I had been led to believe. It harmonized rather than overpowered. My latest summer beer fetish: Magic Hat #9. ~s
